Process for setting SDGs activity goals

In order to ensure that all employees work together to deal with the SDGs, we have selected the social issues to be addressed through the following process.

In addressing the SDGs, the SDGs committee members selected from each department discussed how to adapt the company's unique business model to the SDGs framework.

We are developing our shipping business with a business model specializing in chartering, which concludes cargo transport contracts, operations, which manages ship operations, and technical management, in which we have been involved in the construction of more than 150 new vessels since the company was founded.

As we operate in an environmentally conscious region, we have always been a pioneer in implementing measures to comply with environmental regulations, such as emission regulations and ballast water regulations.
Each department has reviewed the maximum possible measures in its business model, from the procurement and operation of environmentally friendly vessels in the shipping industry, to the construction of environmentally friendly buildings in the real estate industry, and even daily operations such as environmental measures in the office.
In the future, in addition to what we can do on our own, we will build a system to share and promote the principles of the SDGs to our business partners related to the ships we operate.

  1. STEP.01

    Selection of social issues

SDGs team of representatives from all divisions of the DOWA LINE identifies common global social issues and social issues that need to be specifically addressed by our company as it develops its business and draws up a list of key social issues in compliance with the SDGs guidelines.

  2. STEP.02

    Identification of priority social issues

Based on the opinions of external experts such as the Britannia P&I Club, the social issues to be addressed with numerical targets were narrowed down to the three categories of "safety", "people" and "environment" that should be the most important for a shipping company.

  3. STEP.03

    Selecting SDGs action goals

We have reviewed the consistency between the 17 goals of the SDGs and the key issues defined in STEP 2 and selected three social issues of "safety", "people" and "environment" as our SDGs action goals, which were approved by the Board of Directors.

Monitoring of activities

We have set specific numerical targets in each department for the achievement of SDG activity targets, and each employee is committed to working towards the SDGs on a daily basis by incorporating a monitoring system into their normal workflow.
In particular, with regard to the 'environment', which we have identified as a materiality, regulations and guidelines have been established by the IMO over many years because the business activities of companies in the shipping industry have a significant impact on the global environment.
IMO(International Maritime Organization); a specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes cooperation between governments and formulates treaties on technical and legal issues relating to shipping and shipbuilding industries.
The organizational structure we have built up in order to comply with IMO regulations and guidelines has been transformed into a monitoring system for SDGs activity targets.
